LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Nov. 12 — The provincial government will build fully air-conditioned birthing stations in all 14 government hospitals in Pangasinan to provide solution to high maternal and child deaths.

Gov. Amado Espino Jr. said the stations will be called maternal and newborn care units.

Espino said the center is his response to the alarming report that Pangasinan has the highest rate of maternal mortality in Ilocos Region.

In 2007, the Provincial Health Office recorded 17 maternal deaths.

Through the centers, the mothers will be protected from infection during the period of their pregnancy.

The governor said all the provincial government-run hospitals are set to acquire modern fetal doppler, pulse oxymeter at ultrasound machines.

The Espino administration's moves aim to send the message to mothers in Pangasinan, particularly the indigents, that they can give birth in hospitals with full attention.

The governor said as much as possible, they will discourage mothers to give birth in their homes. (PNA)
